MS Office file formats change.Didn't they learn the last time? Yes XML is great and all, but yikes!
Begs the question: if a switch to XML reduces the file sizes by 75%, what sort of junk were they putting in there before?Categories: XML, Office 12, Office.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but based on what I've read on some of the msdn blogs, I think that the 75% file size reduction is principally achieved by using ZIP file compression.
Too bad they didn't just decide to go with OASIS OpenDocument XML format, so we could use the same format from any office application. And OpenDocument is very well documented format and completely open and free to use and there are many office suits athat already support it natively without the need for conversion. But no MS just have to make it hard for users and lock them into their products.
